The Count Five formed in San Jose, California, in 1964. This garage rock band was principally comprised of leading guitarist, John Michalski; bassist, Roy Chaney; leading vocalist and rhythmic guitarist, John Byrne — who was actually born in Dublin, Ireland — and drummer, Craig Atkinson. Nevertheless, the band was prone to changes in its personnel.
The quintet’s only major hit came towards the end of 1966 when its initial single, “Psychotic Reaction”, peaked at No.5 on the American charts. In spite of the recording having been in receipt of an ample amount of airplay in Australia, it was destined to only reach a zenith of No.35 there.
Although a further five singles were released, none was to make an impression on the charts and by 1969 The Count Five had disbanded.
